We brought Minimalisanyc to help us empty out our basement. The basement originally was a functional space, but over 6 years: parents passed away, careers changed, children outgrew toys...and the basement became the dumping ground. It was embarrassing to bring service techs (or anyone else) to the basement. Our older children begged for a usable space to hang out with friends. So we finally decided to make a concerted effort to empty it out...but we were getting no where....it was too overwhelming every time we went downstairs. We made very little progress... we realized that we needed help and we brought in Lisa.
She was undaunted by the task ahead of us. She had a strategy so that we could work together to get it done. The goal was not to just get it done, but to prevent it from happening again. It was emotionally tough for me because I am incredibly sentimental, but she helped me understand that keeping all the (useless) belongings of my parents (and past in general) was torturing me rather than bringing me joy. The excess dishes, and other useful items that I did NOT need could be donated and help others in need. Some items I could hold, re-experience, and then let go. And some items were truly important and worth keeping as a special souvenir of the past (very small pile!)
The bigger picture is that now, I go through my belongings in other rooms to figure out what I can discard so that I can have more peace. We have new routines to prevent the pile up. And when I go shopping, I really think about what I am buying...do I really need this? Do I have enough? I have bought very little lately...it is great! And best of all, we are painting and getting new carpet for the basement because we can!!!

The experience that I had with Lisa and her team was truly an extraordinary one. What Lisa and the team did for me, I could have never achieved on my own. I have always been one to like options, and I always like to have items in the bulk to ensure that I always have whatever I need, whenever I may need it. However, after working with Lisa I have learned to get more into the less is more mindset. I am still getting there, but I certainly did learn a thing or two to guide me toward the right track.
